Context Clues
Standard R1G in Missouri states that students will, "During reading, utilize strategies to determine meaning of unknown words." When we present this expectation to our students, we tell them to use context clues. As students read, they need to be able to read through difficult words without having to stop to use the dictionary. However, they should be able to pull the basic meaning out of that word by looking at the sentences around the word.
